Blades Send Schulz to Kelowna

Saskatoon, SK: The Saskatoon Blades announced this afternoon that they have dealt 20-year-old defenseman David Schulz to Kelowna Rockets in exchange for a 5th round selection in the 2007 WHL Bantam draft.

Schulz, a 6’4 210lbs defenseman was obtained by the team in a blockbuster deal last season from the Spokane Chiefs which saw Schulz, Joe Logan, Jim Watt and Chad Klassen come to the Bridge City in exchange for d-man Evan Haw, goaltender Kevin Armstrong and draft picks. Schulz a former 8th round pick of the Vancouver Canucks attended the Edmonton Oilers camp this past year and upon his return to the Blades he appeared in a pair of games this season picking up 2 assists. Blades Head Coach and General Manager Lorne Molleken spoke on today’s trade “This trade allows David a chance to go to a young team and provide leadership and add a large presence to the backend in Kelowna. We would like to thank David for his contribution to our hockey club and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Well here in K-Town, I think this is a good thing. We need as much leadership as we can get this year as well as some "proven" defensemen. I don't think the Rockets had a choice but to go looking for a D-man with the loss of Cuminsky and Edler.

How did Schultz look in his first game? Understand he is a physical presence with a great shot.

your right on half of that. He has a decent shot...physical prescence he is not. You will be dissapointed if you expect him to come in and put someone through the glass (which he has the size to do). WHen he first came to s'toon last year he looked almost scared in the corners. He does not use his body the way he could and should. Like a big p-ussy cat. Overall he is a solid d-man that any team would benefit from. Good pick up for you guys. Just don't expect the physical play.

physical presence !!! Thats funny! The guy is scared of his own shadow in the corners. Good thing you didn't have to give up too much.

IMO with the continued "officiating crackdown" there are a few bigger guys that are afraid to use their size for fear of putting their team down a man for 2 min or more. I think most of us have seen a few good, clean checks be called an elbow, roughing, etc. simply because of size difference between players.

In last seasons playoffs Schulz was awesome and was hitting hard! Hopefully he does that in Kelowna
