StreakingAms get Silvertips
This story was published Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

By Annie Fowler, Herald staff writer

As the Tri-City Americans continue their hottest start in franchise history, the hockey archives are getting a workout.

On a seven-game win streak, which equals the team's last such run from Feb. 14 to March 2, 1999, the Americans also earned their first ranking in the Canadian Hockey League poll since October 1999, coming in at No. 9.

Now, coach Don Nachbaur's challenge is to keep the team balanced and not let early success get in the way of the challenges ahead.

"I think the next four games will ground us," said Nachbaur, whose team plays Everett, Prince George and Central Division-leading Medicine Hat this week. "We have beaten a couple pretty good teams, but when you are on a win streak, games are bigger and teams are out for you. Everett will be a test."

Tri-Cities (7-1-0-0, 14 points) will try and run its win streak to eight tonight when it travels to Everett (7-1-0-1, 15 points) to take on the U.S. Division-leading Silvertips. The Americans were 3-6-0-1 against Everett last season and were winless at Everett Events Center.

"Our record could be different right now, but we have found a way to make it the way it is," Nachbaur said. "By no means are we content. We know we have a lot of work to do. We have still yet to face teams like Everett, Vancouver and Prince George. I'm not taking anything away from what we have done, but if we are going to prove ourselves, we need to go into Everett and get a win."

The Americans have put their record-setting pace together with five road games and three at home in the friendly confines of Toyota Center, where they will play host to Prince George on Friday and Saturday and Medicine Hat on Sunday.

"The biggest thing is we focus on our game and try to get better each game," Nachbaur said. "We are making out just like any team on a streak. It has been a pretty good group effort. Confidence has been part of that. When you win a little, that helps."

Tips take on surprising Tri-City in early season showdown
Game for first place in the U.S. Division also features controversial 'Gear Up and Get In' promotion

By Nick Patterson
Herald Writer

EVERETT - A month ago tonight's game between the Everett Silvertips and Tri-City Americans barely would have registered a blip on the radar, just another early-season meeting between U.S. Division foes.

Who could have imagined it would turn into one of the must-see occasions in the WHL so far this season?

A game that wouldn't have warranted an asterisk suddenly became a hot item as the Silvertips and Americans engage in an early battle for first place in the division - before a controversial backdrop.

Both Everett and Tri-City are off to fast starts. Everett (7-1-0-1) is in first place in the division with 15 points and Tri-City (7-1-0-0) is right behind with 14. The winner of tonight's game strikes the first blow in the race for the division title.

"I think (tonight's) game is unbelievably important," Everett coach Kevin Constantine said. "I think it's going to be a very competitive race all year long between Tri-City and us, as well as everybody in the division. This is an early-season contest that has first place written all over it."

But in the background will be a reminder of past scandal. Tonight is Gear Up and Get In Free night at the Everett Events Center, where fans who come in full hockey equipment are allowed in free of charge.

The promotion is a lighter take on the infamous preseason incident when Constantine, disappointed with the Silvertips' effort during a preseason game at Tri-City, had the team ride the bus home in its gear.

The incident caused an uproar and sparked national debate in Canada regarding discipline methods in youth hockey. Constantine was suspended by the league for four games and given an unprecedented $5,000 fine. CBC television analyst Kelly Hrudey twice criticized the Silvertips during national Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts, first for the incident itself and then for the ensuing promotion.

But perhaps lost in the shuffle are the competitive storylines heading into the game. Everett, considered the runaway preseason favorite in the division, has yet to hit its stride. The results are there, but until Sunday's 8-0 victory over Chilliwack the Tips had yet to turn in a dominating performance.

Meanwhile, Tri-City was ticketed for the basement until a pair of late preseason trades significantly upgraded the team's offense. The Americans' status of having the second-best winning percentage in the league is a surprise to everyone, and tonight they have the opportunity to prove it's no fluke.

"Tri-City is a good hockey team and they're going to be ready to play (today)," Everett leading scorer Zach Hamill said. "Hopefully we can match the energy because they have solid lines, good D and really good goaltending."

Matching that energy may be more difficult for Everett than one might think. Tonight's game is Everett's fourth in five nights. Before this stretch the Tips hadn't played more than two games in a week. Therefore the Tips will have to find a reserve of energy they haven't had to dip into yet this season.

In contrast, the Americans should be well rested. Tri-City played just twice last weekend and had Sunday off, giving the Americans two full days to prepare.

"I think the good news about the weekend is we played everybody pretty consistently," Constantine said. "We didn't lean on any one group or any one person."

The Americans come into the game riding a seven-game winning streak, with the team's only loss coming on opening day at Kootenay. Of those seven wins, one was in overtime and two came in shootouts.

Tri-City is led by goaltender Carey Price (4-0-0-0, 2.15 goals against average, .933 save percentage). The 19-year-old was the fifth-overall pick in the 2005 NHL draft by Montreal and is considered the favorite to backstop Canada's World Junior Hockey Championships team this year.

The offense is led by a pair of newcomers. Nineteen-year-old left wing Colton Yellow Horn (five goals, four assists) was the biggest acquisition from the preseason trades. Nineteen-year-old left wing Erik Felde (five goals, five assists) has been a major contributor as a rookie. Eighteen-year-old right wing Taylor Procyshen is the team's leading goal scorer with seven.

If the Americans have a weakness it's on defense, where there's a lack of experience.

Don't be a bitter fan. I know you're better than that. Don't make yourself sound bad by blaming it all on the officials and making that silly of a comment.

The officiating was the same both ways. There were many calls and non-calls that could have been. Tri was definately the less disciplined team tonight. They retaliated twice and got called when they would have been on the power play. That would have evened them up. Both teams had long 5 on 3's. The PP were only 9-7. It certainly wasn't the difference in the game. Fact of the matter is, Evt was playing it's 4th game in 5 nights and Tri only played on Saturday. They should have had more energy than they came out with.

The Silvertips pull farther ahead of second place Tri-Cities with 17 points and an 8-1-0-1 record. The Americans have a 7-2 history and 14 points.

Silvertips newcomer Brandon Campos scored the first two markers for Everett. Both goals came in the second period. Ten minutes later Campos sent the puck through Price's 5-hole to push the Silvertips up 2-0. Kyle Beach finished out the second stanza with a goal at 14:35, on yet another Silvertips' power play. Everett cools off Americans

From Herald news services

EVERETT -- In an early battle for first place in the Western Hockey League's U.S. Division, the Everett Silvertips scored three second-period goals en route to a 4-1 win over the Tri-Cities Americans on Tuesday night at the Everett Events Center.

Brandon Campos scored two goals to lead the Silvertips (8-1-0-1), who snap-ped Tri-Cities' seven-game win streak and now lead the Americans (7-2-0-0) by three points.

Tri-Cities gave the Silvertips seven power plays in the second period, and Everett converted two of them to build a 3-0 lead after two periods.

Colton Yellow Horn scored his sixth goal for the Americans with 4:48 left in the third period to prevent the shutout.

Everett was the preseason favorite to win the U.S. Division, while not much was expected from Tri-Cities. However, the Americans got off to a blistering start and came into the game riding a seven-game winning streak.

"Playing four in five nights, I thought there was just a teeny bit of fatigue in our game," said Everett coach Kevin Constantine. "But the fact that Tri-City is very good and it was a first-place contest, I think that helped us get a little energy even though we were a little tired."

Carey Price suffered his first loss in the Americans net, stopping 26 of 30 shots. Leland Irving stopped 26 of 27 shots for the Silvertips.

Tips fly past Tri-City
In an early season battle between the top two teams in the U.S. Division, Everett gets two goals from Brandon Campos and cruises to a victory over the Americans Tuesday night.

By Nick Patterson
Herald Writer

EVERETT - The Everett Silvertips are the reigning sovereign.

The Tri-City Americans are the aspiring usurper.

Tuesday night they engaged in their first battle for U.S. Division supremacy.

And the sovereign showed the usurper it'll take a little more to wrest the crown away.

In an early battle for first place the Silvertips scored an emphatic victory over the Americans, prevailing 4-1 at the Everett Events Center.

Brandon Campos scored two goals to lead Everett (8-1-0-1), which controlled the game between teams ranked in the top 10 in the entire Canadian Hockey League.

Everett now leads the Americans (7-2-0-0) by three points for first place in the division, and the Tips stated they don't intend to surrender their position atop the division easily.

"Every game is a statement, and hopefully every game we can come out with the same outcome," Campos said. "It was even bigger today because Tri's been playing some really good hockey lately, and so have we. We came out with a win, so hopefully that sets the tone for the next couple of games against them. It should be a great rivalry the rest of the year."

Zach Hamill added a goal and an assist and Kyle Beach also scored for Everett. Leland Irving made 26 saves in goal for the Tips.

Colton Yellow Horn scored and Carey Price finished with 26 saves in goal for Tri-City.

The crowd of 4,567 included a number of people, mostly kids, who took advantage of the Gear Up and Get In Free promotion and showed up in full hockey equipment. The promotion was a take off on the preseason busgate incident, when after a poor effort at Tri-City Everett coach Kevin Constantine had the players ride the bus home in their gear. One group of geared-up kids came with a sign shaped like a bus, complete with windows which they peered through.

Everett was everyone's preseason favorite to win the U.S. Division, while not much was expected from Tri-City. However, the Americans got off to a blistering start and came into Tuesday's game riding a seven-game winning streak.

But Everett, playing its fourth game in five nights, took control in the second period when Tri-City gave the Tips seven power plays. Everett took advantage twice and led 3-0 going into the third, Campos scoring twice. Hamill's goal midway through the third period put the game away, rendering Yellow Horn's tally with less than five minutes remaining inconsequential.

"Playing four in five nights I thought there was just a teeny bit of fatigue in our game," Constantine said. "But the fact that Tri-City is very good and it was a first-place contest, I think that helped us get a little energy even though we were a little tired."

Everett also had a distinct edge on specialty teams. The Tips finished 2-for-10 on the power play, the Americans went 0-for-7.

"They were more composed than we were," Tri-City coach Don Nachbaur said. "A lot of their guys have been through this before and have the experience of being in that first-place game. Tonight was a shocker for us. But it's one hockey game, there's a lot left."

Historically, games between the Silvertips and the Americans have taken a distinct flavor, with Everett trying to finesse its way around the Americans, and Tri-City trying to overpower the Tips. However, after being on the receiving end of most of the physical play early, Everett started dishing out hits of its own and by the end of the game the physical battle was a draw.

"We just tried to match their physical play," said Everett center Zack Dailey, who despite being the smallest guy on the ice dished out one of the biggest hits of the night when he leveled Yellow Horn. "They're a great team, they're real physical and they like to lay the body, so we just came out and tried to match their physical play."

Campos opened the scoring with a power-play goal 2 minutes, 16 seconds into the second period, scoring into an unguarded net after a nice feed from Lukas Vartovnik. He scored again at 11:59, sneaking a shot from the left slot past Price at the near post.

Beach made it 3-0 with another power-play goal at 14:35, tipping in a shot from the point by Peter Mueller.

Tri-City never again threatened the lead.

Slap shots: Hamill has points in all 10 of the Tips' games this season. The 10-game point streak matched the club record set by Mueller and Torrie Wheat last season. ... Everett was back to playing its first-choice lineup - minus injured left wing Ondrej Fiala - as left wing Shane Harper returned after being held out the previous two games. He replaced right wing Jesse Burt in the lineup.
