The Portland Winter Hawks built an early three-goal lead, then withstood a late Kamloops rally and won 6-3 on Friday night at Memorial Coliseum for their second consecutive victory.

Powered by goals from six players, the Hawks (5-7-0-0) belied their U.S. Division cellar-dwelling record against the Blazers (7-4-1-1), who were in second place in the B.C. Division. Kamloops had won three in a row and six of its last seven games.

Portland scored on three of seven power plays against Kamloops, which came into the game fourth in the Western Hockey League in penalty kills. The Blazers, meanwhile, mustered one goal in seven power play opportunities. The teams finished with 35 shots each

Portland played a nearly perfect first period before 3,625 despite being outshot 14-10. The Hawks scored on both of its power plays and killed Kamloops' two power plays.

Center Kyle Bailey scored his second goal of the season at the 5-minute, 48-second mark. Off a pass from Chris Francis that threaded a needle, an open Bailey took a quick shot in the slot that beat Kamloops' 16-year-old goaltender Dalyn Flette, who finished with 29 saves.

Left wing Rob Klinkhammer's chip-shot 4-on-3 goal, his ninth of the season, barely missed a defender's stick and made it 2-0 at 11:05.

Then, seconds after killing a Kamloops power play, Portland scored its third goal of the period at 16:04 on a breakaway by Matt Sokol, his third of the season.

Kamloops got on the scoreboard less than a minute into the second period with what appeared to be a fluke goal. The puck deflected off Travis Dunstall's stick and trickled into the net past a surprised Hawks goaltender Kurtis Mucha, who finished with 32 saves. The unassisted goal was Dunstall's second of the season.

But Portland halted a shift in momentum with a 5-on-4 goal at 6:11. The shot by left wing Frazer McLaren, off a give-and-go with Nick Hotson and a great cross from Colton Sceviour, barely trickled into the net. But it was enough for a 4-1 lead.

The Hawks held off a Kamloops rally in the third period. Blazers left wing Brock Nixon scored his ninth goal of the season at 5:13 off a deflection that sailed past Mucha's right side that cut the Portland lead to 4-2. Kamloops made it a one-goal game at 10:28 with a goal by Terrance Delaronde.

But a wrist shot by Viktor Sjodin at 14:58 gave the Hawks a 5-3 lead and a comfortable cushion. Sceviour iced the game with 15 seconds left, scoring off a steal into an empty Kamloops net.

Note:

The Hawks scratched defensemen Jordie Fike, Ty Ariss and Cameron Cepek and forwards Chip Petrino and Matt Betker.

(Interesting not to Kamloops Porland games is that the Blazers have not won a game in the Memorial Colesium since 1996)

Its ok, the Blazers from all accounts from Hawk fans outplayed the Hawks for the most part all game long. A couple quick goals will usually almost always deflate a team, but the Blazers battled back hard and thats all you can ask for.

Tonite they are going to stomp a mudhole in the Birds and I predict a 5-2 Blazer win.
