They say that records are meant to be broken. Even Gretzky thinks somebody will come along and break a few of his records one day.

I'm not sure if or how much scoring is up this year with the crackdown on obstruction, but does anyone think there is even a remote chance that any of these WHL single season records will EVER be broken??

If so, which ones might have a chance? Which one is least likely to be broken?

Most Goals : 108 (Ray Ferraro - Brandon - 83/84)
Fastest 50 goals from start of season : 27 games (Bill Derlago-Brandon-77/78)
Most Assists : 136 (Rob Brown - Kamloops - 86/87 )
Most Points : 212 (Rob Brown - Kamloops - 86/87)
Most Goals Defenceman : 50 (Lawrence Sacharuk - Saskatoon - 71/72)
Most Points Defenceman : 140 (Cam Plante - Brandon - 83/84 )
Most Assists Defenceman : 118 (Cam Plante - Brandon - 83/84)
Most Points Rookie : 145 (Petr Nedved - Seattle - 89/90)
Most PIM : 511 (Brent Gogal - Billings- 77/78)

Wow!
It sure is a totally different game from the run and gun days of the past.

I just cant see any of them being broken to be honest.

Getting 50 goals or 100 points in this day and age is considered superstar, getting 50 goals in 27 games? Good luck.

And considering most good/great teams now get around 250 goals in a season, I cant see 1 player getting more than 100 assists.

Not even the penatly minutes one is in danger even with new calls. To get that kind of total, you would have to fight almost every game, and the league just doesn't have guys like that anymore.

If they keep calling the obstruction calls and trying to open the game up I think some of those points records could be broken.

Would have the best chance at being broken. when you have D-men like Russel i think that record is in jeopardy

I was thinking that myself. The next closest would have to be the penalty minutes record, although that is still a huge longshot, especially with todays kind of hockey. All the others though...i just cant see being broken

The one where Rob Brown got 212 points is pretty amazing. That's one guy figuring in on more goals than 12 teams scored last season!

But 50 goals in 27 games? Gretzky said his 50 in 38 (or was it 39?) is the one he thinks will be hardest to break in the NHL. (Like there's any hope for all of his other ones!)

All those records are pretty untouchable at this point. It's going to take someone pretty special to even come close I think. The one that would be "easiest" to break would be the goals by a defencemen I think. That's just my opinion though.

some math...
In Rob Browns 212 pt. season he was averageing 3.36 points a game.
This year, points leader Martin Hanzal is averaging 1.75 points a gain which at this rate will take him to 136 points on the season.

Random Fact.
Gretzky averaged 1.9 pts a game in his NHL career.

It's even sicker when you look at the CHL records, single season:
Most Goals: Mario Lemieux 133
Fastest 50: Mario also did it in 27 (Guy Lafleur did it in 28)
Most Assists: Pierre Larouche 157
Most Points: Mario 282 (wow)
Most Points Rookie: Pat LaFontaine 234 (yikes)

Mario Lemuiex had a better points per game percentage(I would find the correct number but i'm to tired to find it) then wayne Gretzky. I think if lemiuex didnt get injured and miss like 2-3 seasons i think he would be close or have more points then gretzky but that IMO.

Lemieux might have come close if not for 2 limiting factors: #1. he played more years in the clutch and grab era (ie Wayne started in 79/80 after already playing pro for a couple of years (WHA) and Mario started in 84/85 fresh out of junior), and of course, #2. his health, which was a major factor..
oh, and Wayne played with many more high end players, I think...

Wayne had 2,857 points in 1,487 games (1.92 PPG)
Mario had 1,723 points in 915 games (1.88 PPG)

So, Wayne scored 1,134 more points in 572 more games (1.98 PPG)

But, you're right Wayne played 20 years with not much injury, averaged 74 games per year. Mario played in 21 NHL seasons, but had 4 years where he played 0 games, and another 4 where he played a total of 80 games.

I don't think Sid; Ovechkin; Malkin or anyone else born yet are going to hit those numbers regardless of how much they're trying to open up the game. The 'system' is just way more defence oriented than it was in the 80's.
And, I truly think the goalies are better these days. Combination of skill and technique, and equipment.
