...Tips player gets knocked into net, it goes off it's post. Looks like there might be a second or two left, but clock runs down to Zero. Bailey and Beach start throwing punches. Bailey leaves the ice with a bit of blood, but I don't know if it was from Beach or from being on the bottom of the pile in front of the net. Not really a fight, just one of those in front of the net scrums. Portland announcers are up in arms about a "Tackle" Gutierrez got on Bailey with about 10 seconds left. Ref says game is over and doesn't add as econd or two back onto the clock.

Portland Coach Williamson and Ref are having heated discussion in tunnel after game (showing it on the feed).

A lot to talk about, exciting end to a game.

Gutierrez gone wild
Everett's Moises Gutierrez scores three goals ... and the Silvertips defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 4-3.

Nick Patterson, Herald Writer

Herald staff

PORTLAND, Ore. - In his four seasons in Kamloops, Moises Gutierrez was considered a disappointment, a player with obvious abilities who was unable to translate those skills into results.

The Everett Silvertips took a chance on Gutierrez, giving him a fresh start via offseason trade, and it's proving an inspired decision.

Gutierrez scored a natural hat trick to give Everett control of the game, and the Silvertips hung on to defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 4-3 Saturday night.

Gutierrez scored three consecutive goals during a 15-minute span of the first and second periods, giving Everett a 3-1 lead. The hat trick was the first by an Everett player this season.

Eric Doyle also scored and Zach Hamill added three assists for Everett (22-2-0-1), which won its fourth straight. Leland Irving earned the win in goal, making 21 saves.

Hamill's assists made him the all-time career leading scorer in Everett history. He now has 128 points for Everett, eclipsing the previous mark of 126 set by Torrie Wheat.

Chip Petrino, Colton Sceviour and Kyle Bailey scored for Portland (9-17-0-1). Kurtis Mucha finished with 20 saves in goal.

The game was played heavily in special teams, which proved advantageous to Everett. The Tips finished 4-for-12 on the power play, Portland was 2-for-11.

Gutierrez never scored more than 15 goals in a season for Kamloops. But his three goals Saturday gave him a team-leading 16 for Everett this season in just 25 games.

Everett trailed 1-0 when Gutierrez went to work, scoring three straight power-play goals. His first came at 13 minutes, 53 seconds of the first period on a rebound. The second came 13 seconds into the second period as he redirected in Jason Fransoo's shot from the point. He completed the hat trick at 7:27 of the second, Peter Mueller's long pass sending him on a breakaway, on which he beat Mucha.

Everett led 4-1 after Doyle scored from the point at 15:32 of the second. But in what's becoming a worrying trend for Everett, the Tips were unable to keep an opponent down as Portland fought back into the game. Sceviour scored on the power play at 16:47 of the second and Bailey scored on the power play 2:47 into the third, cutting Everett's lead to one. The Tips then needed a miracle glove save by Irving on Michael Sauer, then some help from the post on Max Gordichuk's shot, to preserve their lead.

Patterson didn't write that part. It was in the headline, which I left off since it was an error by some back room staffer.
