Hockey Canada Announces 38 Players Invited To National Junior Team Selection Camp
Created: Dec 4, 2006
13 WHL PLAYERS INVITED TO SELECTION CAMP - Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), announced on Monday that 38 of Canada’s best junior-aged hockey players (born in 1987 or later) have been invited to take part in Canada’s National Junior Selection Camp from December 10-15, 2006 at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary, AB.

Of the 38 players invited, 11 are returning players, having won gold at last year’s 2006 IIHF World Junior Championship in Vancouver. Twenty-nine (29) of the 38 named today attended Canada’s August National Junior Team Development Camp in Calgary in August 2006.

Team Canada’s Head Scout Jim Hammett traveled coast to coast during the first part of the 2006-07 hockey season assessing, evaluating and selecting players for this December Selection Camp in Calgary. Hammett also oversaw player evaluations at Canada’s August National Junior Team Development Camp in Calgary.

“The quality and skill of the 38 players named today, is a testament of the hard work, commitment and development of all those involved in the Canadian minor hockey and junior hockey system,” said Jim Hammett, Head Scout, Hockey Canada. “Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence, including our Under-17 and Under-18 Programs, has provided many of these players with the preparation and experience to deal with the rigors of the upcoming World Juniors and the high paced international competition. We are looking forward to a very competitive camp next week in Calgary.”

“Hockey Canada would like to congratulate all the players named today that will attend our camp, as well as their club teams, the coaches, the volunteers and the parents that have helped them from minor hockey through to now and finally their parents,” said Brad Pascall, Senior Director, Men’s National Teams. “It is a difficult task each and every year to assemble this list due to the depth of such skilled Canadian players across Canada. Jim Hammett has done an excellent job of evaluating and naming these players that will compete for a spot on our team.”

Does anyone one know if this means Jordan Staal and Brule wont be on the team?

brule is definately a no as he did not participate in the summer evaluation camp. i do not know staal's situation, i would be pleasantly surprised if the penguins released him to play.

- the two goalie spots are wide open.

- five returning defensemen, eight roster spots, three open?

- six returning forwards, 13 roster spots, 7 open?

i notice 22 forwards invited this year as opposed to 18 last year. esposito, little, and setoguchi participated in selection camp a year ago. does it give them an inside edge to the 7 open spots?

european rink means more ice to cover. speed, positioning, and coverage are all going to be extremely important.

screw Mason and Bernier. Give the goalie spots to Price and Irving.

brule won't be he didn't attend the summer evaluation camp so team canada has a rule that players that don't attend won't be picked

Tavares is a natural goal scorer but he can't skate as good as SID!

Hockey Canada has released the last six players from its selection roster for the World Junior Hockey Championship, with Lewiston goaltender Jonathan Bernier, London Knights netminder Steve Mason, Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Dustin Kohn, Brendan Mikkelson of the Vancouver Giants, Mississauga Ice Dogs forward Cody Bass and Gatineau forward Claude Giroux going back to their junior clubs.

Other cuts from the final roster on Thursday included goaltender Trevor Cann of the Peterborough Petes, Guelph defenceman Drew Doughty, blueliner Keaton Ellerby of the Kamloops Blazers, Saginaw defenceman Patrick McNeill, Brandon Wheat Kings forward Codey Burki, centre Ben Maxwell of the Kootenay Ice, Acadie-Bathurst's Mathieu Perreault, Prince George winger Devin Setoguchi, Chris Stewart of the Kingston Frontenacs, Quebec Remparts forward Angelo Esposito and Oshawa Generals forward John Tavares.

Mason, Giroux, Tavares, Esposito, Doughty, Cann, Ellerby, Maxwell and Perreault are eligible to return and try out for the 2008 National Junior Team.

The 2007 roster features 11 players from Brent Sutter's squad that took gold in Vancouver last January. Two 17-year-old players - forward Sam Gagner of the London Knights and Calgary Hitmen defenceman Karl Alzner - are already touted as top prospects for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Yes. The past couple of years Canada goalies have been dominated by the WHL and we've proved that WHL'ers win championships, I mean come on we havn't lost a game in 2 straight tournies.
