Originally owned by 18 investors, some names like Bret the "Hitman" Hart, Theoren Fleury and Joe Sakic. In 1997 the Calgary Flames purchased the Hitmen, the Flames own and operate the Hitmen hockey club.

The Hitmen play all home games in the Pengrowth Saddledome - 19,600.

In 2004-05, in the wake of the 2004-05 NHL lockout. the Hitmen averaged 10,062 fans, the first junior team to ever average 10,000, and the highest average of any junior or professional team in North America. Their season total of 362,227 set WHL and CHL records.

Perhaps the most successful example of the 'Bear Toss' is the Calgary Hitmen's annual toss game, which they bill as "the worlds largest teddy bear toss." On December 04, 2005, Hitmen fans broke their own CHL record when 13,650 bears were thrown onto the ice

Ladd also became the first Hitmen alumnus to win the Stanley Cup, which he did with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.

Euro Draft 2006

Calgary Hitmen announced today the selection of Robin Figren 17th overall in the 2006 CHL Import Draft.

Figren is a 5’11” 175 lbs. left winger from Frolunda, Sweden. The 18 year-old is a 3rd round draft choice of the New York Islanders, taken 70th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

The Hitmen were originally slated to pick 57th overall but moved up to 17th by completing a deal with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Hitmen sent 19 year-old Czech forward Lukas Vantuch to the ‘Canes in exchange for the 17th overall pick and 18 year-old forward Isaac Reid.

In a separate move the Hitmen dealt their original first round 2006 CHL Import pick, 57th overall to the Prince Albert Raiders for an 8th round Bantam Pick in 2007.

Brad Moran Jersey Retirement
Fitting a guy nicknamed Bugsy was the first Hitmen hero.

He became the first 50-goal sniper, the first 100-point luminary, the all-time leading scorer and only WHL most valuable player.

And it's fitting a guy nicknamed Bugsy will also be the first Hitmen to have his number retired.

Clark, knowing his former star captain has toiled in the minors so much, says that's what makes this honour all the better.

"Sometimes in junior we honour guys for what they've done after, when really retiring a jersey like Brad's is more important," Clark said.

"He meant so much to our club and is a reason why we have a championship banner in the rafters and all the division champions.

"He's a reason why we did what we did."

Moran, relished every minute of his lengthy Hitmen career.

"There was the downs and ups. I'll never forget the whole five-year experience and all the great times I had there," he said. "To go through what we did the first two years there made winning that much more memorable, more of an accomplishment to go -- as a team -- from where we were in year one."....
