Originally owned by 18 investors, some names like Bret the "Hitman" Hart, Theoren Fleury and Joe Sakic. In 1997 the Calgary Flames purchased the Hitmen, the Flames own and operate the Hitmen hockey club.

In 2004-05, in the wake of the 2004-05 NHL lockout. the Hitmen averaged 10,062 fans, the first junior team to ever average 10,000, and the highest average of any junior or professional team in North America. Their season total of 362,227 set WHL and CHL records.
Perhaps the most successful example of the 'Bear Toss' is the Calgary Hitmen's annual toss game, which they bill as "the worlds largest teddy bear toss." On December 04, 2005, Hitmen fans broke their own CHL record when 13,650 bears were thrown onto the ice
