Come Back Kids Do It Again; Americans Take Down Rockets 6-5
    September 22, 2007

KELOWNA, B.C. - The Tri-City Americans have been pleased to welcome many new sponsors to the family this season. Yet, after the past two games of the 2007-2008 regular season, the Americans sales staff should be on the phone with Tums® on Monday morning.

For the second straight night, the Tri-City Americans (2-0-0-0, 4 pts) used a late third period rush to overcome a deficit and down their opponent, this time it was the Kelowna Rockets (0-1-0-0, 0 pts). Backed by three goals in the final 4:13, the Americans forced overtime with Kelowna, who once held a 4-1 lead in the contest. Then, just 1:02 into the extra session, Erik Felde sent a slap shot over the blocker of Kelowna's Kristofer Westblom to give Tri-City a 6-5 win at Prospera Place.

However, the Americans got themselves into trouble early in the game to create the pressure cooker in the end. Early in the first period, the Rockets scored twice just over two minutes apart to generate a 2-0 lead. At the 7:33 mark, Shaun Vey netted the Americans first goal of the contest, but the period was book-ended by another two goals from the Rockets, putting Tri-City in a 4-1 hole.

Still, Tri-City continued to battle and, only 29 seconds into the second period, and on the power play, Taylor Procyshen pulled the Americans to within two after he redirected a T.J. Fast shot just under the cross bar.

After heading into the second intermission with a 4-2 lead, Kelowna's lead grew mid-way through the third period after Colin Long took a poor clearing pass from Tri-City's Eric Mestery and beat back-up goaltender Kyle Birch. But, as they did last night against Everett, the Americans took advantage of some late penalties by the Rockets.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in the third period, Kelowna's Brandon McMillan received a five-minute major boarding penalty. Tri-City received a 5-on-3 opportunity with less than six minutes remaining and, just as the one penalty expired, Fast beat Westblom, top shelf, to make it a 5-3 contest.

Kelowna received a penalty for having too many players on the ice during the Fast goal, setting up yet another Tri-City power play. With nearly 30 seconds remaining on the power play, Joel Broda slipped a slap shot between Westblom's pads to pull Tri-City to within one goal. Then, with 1:30 left in regulation, one second after Birch was pulled for an extra attacker, Kruise Reddick redirected a Petr Stoklasa shot, near post, to tie the game at 5-apiece and set the stage for Felde's heroics in overtime.

Through their first two games of the season, the Americans have notched 12 goals, seven of which have come via the power play units, of which five have been registered in the third period or overtime. Tri-City finished the night 4-of-8 on the power play, while Kelowna was 2-for-4 on the man-advantage.

In net, Chet Pickard started the game for Tri-City, but was pulled in favor of Birch after the first period. Pickard finished with nine saves on 13 shots. In relief and appearing in his first WHL contest, Birch stopped 10 of the 11 shots he saw. Meanwhile, Westblom, who is returning from off-season knee surgery, collected 26 saves on 32 shots. The win also marks the fifth straight Tri-City victory over the Rockets and seventh in their last nine meetings. The win also gives the Americans their first 2-0 start to a season since the 2004-05 campaign.

Tri-City will now head back west and wrap-up their three games in three days weekend, when the meet-up with the Chilliwack Bruins on Sunday, September 23rd. Game time is 5:00 PM at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. The Americans went 4-1 against the Bruins in their inaugural season last year, but Chilliwack is also 2-0 to start the 2007-08 season and tied atop the B.C. Division. You can catch all the action live, via WHL WebTV, at Kimo's Sports Café in Richland or on the radio on 97.5 KOLW FM. Tickets are still available for the Americans home opener on Friday, October 5 against the Spokane Chiefs through all Ticketmaster outlets, including the Toyota Center box office, all Fred Meyer locations and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
