The Rockets first selection was Jason Siebert, a forward from Abbotsford, BC. He stands at 5’10, 170 pounds and played for the Abbotsford Hawks last season.

Thanks to a trade, the Rockets selected two players in the third round; Cole Martin (53rd overall) and Ryan Berlin (61st overall).

With their final selection the Rockets chose Sean MacTavish in the ninth round, who is the son of the Edmonton Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish.

President/General Manager Bruce Hamilton responded, “We felt we had a real successful day. We chose ten excellent prospects and are looking forward to watching them grow. In two or three years we’ll find out how good they really are.”

Post Rockets look for size with picks

By Warren Henderson - Kelowna Capital News

At the top of the Kelowna Rockets’ shopping list was a big, physical forward with skill and speed.

Consider it done as the Rockets made Abbotsford’s Jason Siebert their first choice, 17th overall at the WHL Bantam Draft Thursday in Edmonton.

“He’s a big winger and he’s got excellent speed,” Rockets player personnel director Lorne Frey said of Siebert, a 6-foot-1, 179 pounder left wing. “He’s more of a power forward, he’s a physical player and he can skate and score. He’s the complete package.”

Frey and the Rockets stuck with the same theme with their second pick, 39th overall, selecting 6-foot-3 centre Colton Heffley from Swift Current, Sask. “His upside is he’s huge and he skates well for a big guy,” Frey said of Heffley.

“We hope he continues to grow and develop because we think he can be a real good player for us.”

The Rockets had two selections in the third round—defenceman Cole Martin from Arlington, Texas, was chosen 53rd overall, while 6-foot-1 Edmonton forward Ryan Berlin was taken 61st.
