Edmonton, AB.: The Saskatoon Blades are the first Saskatchewan team to solve the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Blades outplayed the Oil Kings in a 4-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Rexall Place. The Blades are on a five game winning streak and the Oil Kings five game win streak against Saskatchewan is over.

“It was tough for us to generate anything, even on the power play,” said Head Coach Steve Pleau. “They have a real good team and a solid defense. We couldn’t crack it.”

The Blades got out of the gate strong and scored the opening goal 13 minutes into the first period. Derek Hulak stormed in on the left wing, bounced a centering pass off a defender and it got past Oil Kings starter Torrie Jung. Saskatoon outshot Edmonton 12-6 and were up 1-0 after the first.

The Blades made it two nothing on a delayed penalty call in the middle of period two. Stefan Elliot fired a point shot through a crowd that found the top corner on Jung. Two and a half minutes later, Burke Gallimore banged a greasy rebound past Jung and it was 3-0.

Saskatoon added another goal in the third when Walker Wintoneak tapped in a cross crease feed from Derek Hulak to make it 4-0. The Blades (7-2-0-2) win puts them in sole possession of first place in the East Division. The Oil Kings (6-5-0-2) are tied for second in the Central Division with the Medicine Hat Tigers, two points back of the Calgary Hitmen.

The Oil Kings start a home and home series with the Hitmen on the road this Wednesday. The two teams meet at Rexall Place on Jersey Friday at 7:00 pm. That is the beginning of three straight home games for Edmonton. The Tigers visit Saturday night for the next Celebrity Saturday, so this is a big week for the Oil Kings. The Seattle Thunderbirds are in for their only visit to Edmonton on October 28th for Sonic Wiener Wednesday.
We had a good start to the season. We better find that winning attitude again.
