    Erricson's Shootout Game-Winner Lifts Grey, 4-3

Goal Scorers: Birkholz, Cumiskey, R. MacDonald, Regier, McCrea, McCalpin
    Everett Silvertips Press Release

Lynnwood, WA - Jari Erricson's goal in the fourth round of the shootout lifted Team Grey to a 4-3 victory over Team Green Sunday afternoon at the Lynnwood Ice Center. The fourth round was necessitated after teammate Geordie Maguire, rookie camp's leading scorer, scored to tie the shootout in the third round.

"I just got a little lucky there - it went underneath his arm," Erricson said. "I was trying to get him to move laterally, and I got a bit lucky."

Goaltender Troy Turpin of Renton stopped three of four stops in the shootout and seven of eight shots in the third period to pick up the victory for Grey.

Grey opened the scoring less than four minutes in while on the power play as Josh Birkholz chipped in a rebound, with assists credited to Tyler Giebel and Darian Henry. After Clayton Cumiskey answered for Green, Winnipeg native Ryan MacDonald gave Grey a 2-1 lead early in the second period.

Jeff Regier tied the game at two midway through the second period with a blast from the left point.

The teams traded goals in the third period, with Markus McCrea putting Green ahead with a wristshot from the top of the circles, followed by an equalizer from Brendan McCalpin with just 3:14 to play.

Erricson, Everett's second round selection in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, acknowledged the hard working attitude at training camp administered by the Silvertips staff and players.

"It's been going pretty well so far. It's been a tough camp, so we'll see how things work out."

The Silvertips will open the 2010 Pre-Season with the annual Holiday Inn Pre-Season Classic, held from Friday, September 3 - Sunday, September 5 at Comcast Arena. Everett opens the tournament against the OHL's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 3.

The Silvertips begin their eighth season in defense of Silvertip Country at home against the rival Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, September 24 to kick off an eight-game homestand. Default Nick Patterson's take

    http://www.heraldnet.com/section/BLOG12

It was a competitive game throughout, with the margin never being more than one goal. Grey's Brendan McCalpin scored with 3:14 remaining in regulation to tie it at 3-3, and Grey then killed off a penalty the final two minutes to get the game to a shootout. The shootout then had a touch of controversy as Green's fourth shooter, Ryan Chynoweth, put the puck into the net on a nifty spin-o-rama move. However, the goal was disallowed because Chynoweth came to a full stop, and Jari Erricson converted for Grey on the following attempt to end the game.

What struck me most about this game is how well the prospects from rookie camp held up when put into a game situation with the vets. Normally in those situations one can easily tell the vets from the rookies. Perhaps it was because my perspective was altered by watching from the end zone, but I didn't notice a dramatic difference in play between vets and rookies today.

Troy Turpin ended up being the winning goalie. I imagine that was a thrill for the 16-year-old Renton resident.
