KENNEWICK, WA – Tri-City Americans Governor/General Manager Bob Tory announced today at a press conference that the team has signed 2010 first-round draft pick, goaltender Eric Comrie, to a standard WHL Players Contract. After a draft-day deal with the Vancouver Giants, Tri-City jumped six spots to select Comrie, 15, with the 13th overall pick.

Comrie, a native of Edmonton, Alberta but resides in Newport Beach, California, became just the second goaltender ever taken by Tri-City in the first round, joining current Montreal Canadiens goaltender, Carey Price (7th, 2002).

Last season, the 6’0, 175 pound netminder played in well over 50 games, with 19 games played in the Elite League for the LA Selects Midget U16 club, where he compiled a 16-2-0 record with five shutouts, along with a 1.34 goals against average and a 0.940 save percentage. Additionally, he led the LA Selects to a semi-final berth in the 2011 National Championship Midget U16 Tournament in Simsbury, Connecticut, assembling a tournament-best 1.41 goals against average and 0.929 save percentage. In international play, Comrie was named the starting goaltender for bronze medal-winning Team Alberta at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he also registered tournament-bests in goals against (1.94) and save percentage (0.927) among goaltenders appearing in three or more games. Comrie and his select teams played for and won the following tournaments…St. Albert AAA Bantam Tournament, Chicago Nike Bauer Tournament and the Silver Sticks Tournament in Ontario. Comrie, as the starting goaltender, also won U.S. National Championships at the PeeWee and Bantam levels.

“We are very excited to get a commitment from Eric and his family to join our organization,” stated Tory. “Eric is the top-rated 1995 goaltender in North America. This gives us tremendous depth at the most important position in hockey.”

“Eric joins a long list of goaltenders that have excelled here in the Tri-Cities,” Tory continued. “He will join our team immediately, so he can experience the WHL Playoff atmosphere.”

Eric is the younger brother of current NHL forward Mike Comrie, who left the University of Michigan after two seasons to play for Tory and the Kootenay Ice during the 2000-01 season. Mike has played in over 580 NHL games, amassing 167 goals and 364 points between stops with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa, the New York Islanders and now the Pittsburgh Penguins. Comrie’s other brother, Paul, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1997 NHL Draft and played four seasons at the University of Denver, earning first team WCHA All-Star honors in 1999. He was later dealt to and made his NHL debut with his hometown Edmonton Oilers before his career was cut short due to injury.
