WHL Releases 2011-12 Regular Season Schedule

The WHL released its 2011-2012 regular season schedule today. The season kicks off with a stand alone game Thursday September 22, when the Moose Jaw Warriors play host to the Brandon Wheat Kings. It will mark the first game in the brand new Moose Jaw Multiplex.

The Vancouver Giants will open the regular season with a home and home series with the Victoria Royals. Friday September 23, the Giants will host the Royals for their home opener at the Pacific Coliseum. The following night the two teams will meet at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria as the WHL returns to the British Columbia capital for the first time since 1994.

This season's schedule includes a 6 game road trip through the Eastern Division beginning November 25th in Prince Albert and finishing up December 3rd in Swift Current and an 8 game home stand beginning December 30th through January 20th. The busiest month of the season is November when the Giants play 13 games over the 30 days. It includes 8 road games and 5 home games. The Christmas break will be December 18-26. The Giants will wrap up the regular sason March 17 in Kelowna.

The 792 game WHL regular season concludes on Sunday, March 18th with the 2012 WHL Playoffs and the battle for the Ed Chynoweth Cup beginning on Friday, March 23rd.

The QMJHL and the City of Shawinigan, Quebec will serve as the official hosts for the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup. The Shawinigan Cataractes will host the WHL Champions, Ontario Hockey League Champions and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Champions from May 18 – 27, 2012.

As in previous seasons, the majority of games will be played on the weekend. Of the 792 games, 538 are scheduled for the weekend, with 233 to be played on a Friday, 235 on a Saturday and 70 on a Sunday. Additionally, 8 weekday games occur on various holidays throughout the season, meaning close to 70% of the schedule is played on a weekend or non-school days. During the week, Wednesday night has 145 matches, 84 games are scheduled for Tuesday, 13 contests will be played on Thursday and 12 games are scheduled to be held on Monday.
