Default Royal's Own Royal Brothers 11Sept

The Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League have the Minnesota Missile in forward Ben Walker.

And what’s better than one Minny Missile? Two of them, of course.

Which is what the Royals may end up with if Ben’s brother, 16-year-old defenceman Jack Walker, makes the team as expected.

Ben Walker, a revelation upon joining the Royals mid-season in 2011-12, could be ranked for the 2013 NHL draft by Central Scouting after showing breakout speed in garnering 34 points in 46 games for Victoria as a 17-year-old.

Default Tri-City acquires Brodie Clowes 13 Sept

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Tri-City Americans acquired 17-year-old defenseman Brodie Clowes from the Victoria Royals on Wednesday for a fifth-round pick in the 2014 Western Hockey League bantam draft.

Last season, Clowes played for the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, collecting one goal, 12 assists and 56 penalty minutes in 46 games.

Clowes, who is recovering from a training camp injury, will begin his rehabilitation in Tri-City. He is expected to miss the first month of the season.

"I watched Brodie play last season in the AJHL and became excited about his potential," Tri-City general manager Bob Tory said in a news release. "When he became available via trade, I felt this was a move necessary to fill a depth chart need for our club."

Keith Hamilton was in a tenuous situation as an over-age 20-year-old goalie returning to the Victoria Royals after a shaky Western Hockey League showing last season with a 4.10 goals-against average and .880 save percentage in 58 regular-season games.

The Royals placed the native of Kelowna, as well as returning 20-year-old forward Mike Forsyth of Calgary, on waivers Monday.

“Keith [Hamilton] knew coming in what the expectations were,” said Royals head coach Dave Lowry.

“The other three goalies [18-year-old returnee Jared Rathjen, 18-year-old Czech Patrik Polivka from the 2012 import draft and

17-year-old Coleman Vollrath from Midget triple-A in Calgary] have had good camps. It’s a credit to these guys that they have come in and pushed.”

Meanwhile, the six-foot-one role forward Forsyth had three goals and 15 points in 72 regular-season games last season in Victoria.

The Royals on Monday also assigned 17-year-old forward Clay Spencer to a team to be determined, likely in Midget or Junior A.

The moves leave the Royals with 27 players — 24 skaters and three goalies — heading into the final two exhibition games Friday in Ladner and Saturday at 2 p.m. at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre against the Vancouver Giants.

Default Royals Trade for Alex Gogolev 15 Sept

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Royals today announced that the team has traded for import forward Alex Gogolev (1992) and a fourth round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft from the Calgary Hitmen. In exchange, the Royals have sent forward Zane Jones (1994) and a conditional sixth round draft choice to the Hitmen.

Gogolev played his first season in the WHL last year after being selected by the Calgary Hitmen in the 2011 CHL Import Draft in the second round, 63rd overall. Gogolev notched 42 points (19g-23a) as well as 111 penalty minutes through 43 games played and was selected to the 2010-11 MHL All-Star Game.

Gogolev also suited up for three games with Spartak Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) during the 2010-11 season. Spartak drafted the forward in the 2009 KHL Draft with their second round, 28th overall, selection.

In the 2009-10 season, Gogolev played 45 games for MHC Spartak, registering 44 points (13g-31a) in his rookie season. Gogolev was also selected to represent Russia at the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge tallying six points (3g-3a) in five games at the tournament en route to a silver medal.

Victoria sends forward Zane Jones to Calgary after the Olds, AB native spent the 2011-12 season with the Royals. Drafted by the Chilliwack Bruins in the fifth round, 91st overall, of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Jones recorded 32 points (14g-18a) last season in 68 games as well as one goal and one assist in four games during the 2012 WHL Playoffs

The Prince Albert Raiders traded a seventh round pick in the 2014 WHL bantam draft to the Victoria Royals for 18-year-old forward Dakota Conroy on Wednesday.

Conroy, an Edmonton, Alta., product, appeared in 67 WHL games last year, splitting the season between Brandon and Victoria.

The 6’1”, 190-pound right-winger posted 11 goals and seven assists for 18 points and 33 penalty minutes last season. He had an assist in four pre-season games this year.
