    Default Reid Duke

"Many of the top players on NHL Central Scouting's final list of North American and international prospects eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft will be front and center when the NHL Scouting Combine takes center stage later this month in Toronto."

Good news for Reid Duke. He has been invited to the NHL Scouting Combine. Despite being 137th on NHL Central Scouting's list, not including Euros and goalies, which would bump Duke down to maybe about 170th overall, he is one of 119 players invited. More than a few NHL teams must have an interest in him to get him picked despite his really low ranking.

He was very fortunate that the rules to pick the players changed this year.

"It's a change from past practice of invites being solely based on Central Scouting's final rankings," Marr said. For the 2014 Combine, a two-stage process was adopted. In the initial stage, the top 75 players on Central Scouting's Players to Watch List were invited [at an earlier date] and the final stage involved the NHL clubs voting in the remaining 45 players. The number of invites increased this year."

That rule change to allow the NHL teams to invite Duke is a Godsend for him!

The sad and extremely disturbing part is that Duke was #65 at the mid term rank, Cooper was #148, Duke slid to #137, Cooper wasn't even ranked on the Final report??? Alan Caldwell's report says that Walters, St. Louis Blues (our only drafted player last season) is still not yet signed? As Robison stated, looks like there is some definite and immediate concerns regarding the management/leadership of this franchise to develop players and you can bet that will be a significant concern for these existing players and newly drafted players like Bellerive going into next season, especially now that it looks like the nose dive will continue, brutally sad for these young men!!! Guessing there will be some more defections early in the season if things do not drastically improve at training camp and starting the season...

Good for Reid Duke. That sucks for Watson & Erkamps last year guys that were on the 2013 Central Scouting list. They changed the rule this year to help players on weaker teams get a chance at the NHL Draft. Last year the Hurricanes had guys listed but no one got invited to the NHL combine. It was based on your final rankings and the Canes had a few on the list. When Reid gets there they will see that yes he can play at the next level. The last couple of years the Hurricanes has not help the careers of Watson & Erkamps the only two veterans still here since there 16 yr old season. You would think that the Hurricanes would try to make a call to pro teams to help the careers of these veteran guys..Good luck Reid Duke at the combine too bad more guys could not get the chance.

Cooper was ranked at 160 in the final rankings...so yes, he also slid down, but he was ranked.

I see that now, was in a bit of a hurry with that post, LOL, stand corrected!

Regardless, a solid program would have allowed all of the players in Lethbridge to get better and would have propelled the elite prospects up the ladder during the last half of the season...

Don Hay has been hired in Kamloops to turn the franchise around and will operate not having to answer to the owners as he is a well respected coach, GM, has won and has produced pro players. The Canes need to hire a "President of Operations" or position of the same ilk and let them have total control.
Should the Canes copy what Kamloops has just done?

What do you all think of bringing Maxwell in to be (at least) the Asst Coach and a mentor to the other young coaches? He would be the only coach with both playing and coaching experience in the WHL. Some say Don Hay is past his prime moving back to Kamloops but I don't buy that... same with Maxwell. Brian Kilrea coached until he was in his 70's.

Maxie was a poor GM (minus the big trade) but he was the best coach this franchise has ever had. He led the Canes to a winning record after losing 15 KEY players from the Memorial Cup run. Some years he had terrible lineups with no future NHLer's but still managed a .500 record.

I will compare him to Darryl Sutter, he ruined his NHL team as a GM but has had nothing but success as a head coach again... 3rd straight year now his club is in the 3rd round of the NHL playoffs.

but at this point anything couldn't hurt..cant see anything changing because of the arrogance of DB and his tried and true systems..to be fair, all we can do is sit back and see what become of this mess when they have a half ass team in front of this current coaching staff...at very least MOST of the talent we have here will be salvageable due to their age and 2 years left on wonderboys contract....be gratefull for that...............
    GO CANES GO.................
