Rebels Deal With Vancouver For Egener

The Red Deer Rebels Hockey Club announced today they have acquired 17-year old defenceman Luke Egener from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for 18-year old defenceman John Flatters. Egener is in his second season with the Giants and was Vancouver’s second round selection, 26th overall, in the 2003 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Sweet! The Giants have been lacking toughness on the blue line for a while now. Flatters is a perfect fit.

This is going to come back to bite the Giants in the ass. Yes the Giants needed more grit, but this was not the way to go about it. They already got rid of a couple of plugs...there area still a couple more to go. For the record, Luke ASKED to be traded. THey would've been better served to get a tough winger, IMO. To lose a kid with the potential that Luke had, especially with the cup coming next season, is not good. Selling too much of the future for a run at the cup is going to make for a pretty crappy team in 08 and beyond. :burningma

He is VERY happy to be leaving though.

Well, if he asked to be traded, then thats a different story. Guess the lack of ice time this year for Egner was the final straw. Had to replace him with another Dman since Fistric and Albers are both down, hopefully Flatters will do allright here. A little more toughness on the back end will be nice.

I am starting to wonder if unloading Gabriel was such a smart move right now, although I am very happy we have Mikkelson.

Best of luck Luke, hopefully you get what you are looking for in Red Deer.

Luke is a great kid to have on any team, his on ice skills are top notch and he will be a player in this league. We also lost a character kid in the room, I'm sure the guys will miss him. He wanted a trade in camp and was looking to get closer to home, he got what he wanted. As for Flatters, his grit will be needed in our own end, the Kelowna games proved that with our tentative play at times. Good luck Luke!!
