Thumbs up Blazers 4 kelowna 1

Not a bad game tonight first period was rather boring with either team looking very good, play picked up in the last few minutes, play was pretty even at both ends,
the second period was much better with the blazers for the most part dominating the period outshooting kelowna 12-7 and Macias scoring for a 1-0 lead, Kassian kicked Anderson but, half way through the period (does Anderson half a death wish) and then later Bender easly handled Bodie these two had been at each other most of the game.
The third period saw kamloops out shoot kelowna 12-8 and out score them 3-1, at times in this period kelowna had more spark in there game but the blazers still out played them, on this night the blazers were the better team and deserved the win, the blazers powerplay worked tonight scoring twice in the third, also the win put kamloops one point ahead of PG in the tight BC Div.

On a day when the Toronto Raptors finally won an NBA game, the Kamloops Blazers scored two power-play goals and physically dominated Kelowna in beating the Rockets, 4-1, on Sunday.

The victory left the Blazers with a 3-0 record against the Rockets this season, the first time Kamloops has beaten the team from the Little Apple three straight times since the first half of the 1999-2000 season.

Yes, you can bet it was a day when blind squirrels everywhere ate heartily.

This season's Blazers, who have been up and down like a toilet seat in the home of the Brady Bunch, took it to the Rockets over this game's last 50 minutes in administering a sound beating to the WHL's defending champions in front of an announced crowd of 4,715 fans in the Interior Savings Centre.

Those fans who bothered to show up saw a Kamloops team dominate the Rockets physically in a manner that hasn't happened in these parts in a long, long time.

The Rockets had six regulars out with injuries and they dearly missed Mike Card and Kyle Cumiskey, two puck-moving defencemen who are the key to their transition game.

After a plodding opening 10 minutes - the Blazers didn't register a shot on goal until the game was more than 13 minutes old - the home boys picked up steam and, for the most part, took it to the visitors.

"It feels good," offered Kamloops right-winger Brock Nixon, who had a terrific game, as did linemates Janick Stieinmann and Terrance Delaronde. "We said in the dressing room, ŚWe have had success when we play physical and obviously they're missing a few guys and the physical aspect of the game is going to be a huge key for us.'

"I thought we came out hard and played physical and that really helped in the long run. You could tell ... they were starting to wear down late in the game."

By the time the second period ended, the Blazers had the edge in shots (17-14), goals (1-0) and fights (2-0), left-winger Matt Kassian having decisioned young challenger Josiah Anderson and defenceman Ryan Bender having scored a thundering victory over big Troy Bodie at 19:14.

"He was chirping so I just told him, `Let's dance,' " said Bender. "I think he was probably trying to get them going." It didn't work as Bender hung a licking on the Rockets' captain, "That was huge," Nixon said. "Especially when he fights a guy like Bodie, who is trying to go out there and get a spark for his team ... and Bender goes and we feel he definitely got the better of him. That's huge for our team."

And by the time the third period began, the crowd was in it as fans clapped in rhythm preceding the Blazers' entrance to the ice surface. At game's end, the fans sent the Blazers home with a rousing ovation.

With Devan Dubnyk strong in goal, again, the Blazers clung to the 1-0 lead, which was courtesy off a Ray Macias score at 7:23 of the second period, and continued to pound the Rockets on the forecheck.

It paid off with power-play goals - YES! POWER-PLAY GOALS! - at 12:24 and 14:06 as defenceman Roman Tesliuk whipped a rocket past goaltender Derek Yeomans and then Nixon beat him at 14:06.

"We played for 60 minutes ... for the most part we stayed out of the (penalty) box," said Bender, who with partner Roman Tesliuk helped shut down Kelowna's top line of Justin Keller, Blake Comeau and Brent Howarth. "Our penalty kill was pretty good other than that last goal ... we came out hitting and our power play got us two goals. That was nice." Clayton Bauer scored Kelowna's goal, on a power play at 16:23, the puck actually going in off a Bender shinpad, but by now the horse was out of the barn and long gone.

"I just had to lose the shutout late," said a smiling Dubnyk, who stopped 21 shots, four fewer than Yeomans, who was magnificent. "It's been that kind of season."

It remained for Macias to put the icing on the cake with a second goal off a 2-on-1 with Ashton Rome. Rome, the captain in the absence of the injured Reid Jorgensen (broken jaw), had a phenomenal outing. Rome drew three assists and was a workhorse.

"He's been phenomenal for us," Nixon said of Rome. "In the room ... away from the rink ... on the ice. He's been tremendous. When things aren't going well offensively, more often than not he's the guy who steps up and works hard to get (a goal). Definitely, he has been a tank for us."

The Blazers, having won two straight, now prepare for a Friday visit by the Medicine Hat Tigers, who whipped them 7-0 in Alberta on Oct. 29.

"We need to start rolling and start bringing it every night," Bender said. "We show that we can play against top teams; it's the teams that are lower that we lose our focus against and aren't mentally prepared (to play)."

The Tigers, however, aren't a bottom dweller. In fact, they own the WHL's best winning percentage (.731).

"We're going to have to really be ready," Bender said. "They really kicked us last time."

JUST NOTES: Referee Chris Savage gave the Blazers seven of 13 minors and three of six majors ... Rockets LW Troy Ofukany, who is from Kamloops, was the best of the visitors, other than Yeomans ... Kelowna head coach Jeff Truitt remained in his club's dressing room after the game and no one was made available to the media inside the WHL's mandated 15 minutes ... The NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets activated C Gilbert Brule, who had been out since Oct. 7 with a fractured sternum, and he scored his first goal in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Coyotes in Phoenix. The Blue Jackets are expected to wait until he plays his ninth NHL game - this was his third - before deciding on whether to keep him.

I like how Rocket fans are keeping out of this. Its sure a nice feeling when they can't talk some of the **** they've been sputing at us the last few seasons. Definetly nice to see them humbled.

Blazers can do it, anytime they want...but thats the problem. If they played that way game in and game out, it would be very very hard to stop them.

We could deffinatly say something KBF...But we just don't find the use of Putting down our team if we lose or use excuses for every loss...U figure that maybe we arn't saying anything because We lost and have moved on? Honestly, some of us Kelowna residents unlike you, have lives outside of WHL Hockey and Our teams progress isn't as important as our families progress

KBF, old buddy? When you cheer for a winning and classy organization like the Rockets you don't get too high or low. You just roll with the punches. Kelowna still hasn't made the final cuts to the team, due to injuries there is 26 man roster. Wait and see what happens when the final team is chosen.

When you cheer for a losing organization like the Blazers, the highs are great and the lows or brutal. KBF you jump when times are good and run down your team when things aren't going good.

So when Rocket fans don't get too excited when we lose to the Blazers you say we are "humbled". This is nothing further from the truth, all it is a fan of a average team trying to get the goat of a far superior organization and team.

Any way you look at it, the Rockets "not being the good anymore" are still ahead of the Blazers in the standings.

No one is sounding like Kamloops fans, were not getting too excited right now. Five points out of first is pretty good for what we are missing IMO.

Jovo, I got alot of respect for you, but that is a load of bull. As great of a city as Kelowna is, you cannot convince me that Rocket fans simply don't care if the Rockets lose especially against an arch nemisis.

And its even more ridiculous that Jared comes on here spoutin about how he doesn't use excuses to why the Rockets lose but I can copy and past about a half of dozen posts that proves him wrong. And also showing how outraged he was about how Kootenay fans were happy they were in first and he was trying to ruin that.

And saying that "OH WE ARE MISSING SOME PLAYERS" thats an excuse right there and totally contradicts everything that you said.

The Rockets are without key players but still have alot of key players in the lineup. Since when was the Rockets system centered around only 2 or 3 players? This is by far the deepest and most talented Rocket team yet, and they've proven they can dominate without those guys, they simply just haven't had the stuff against Kamloops this year.

With or without those guys the Rockets are still going to be a darn good team.
