PENSACOLA, Fla. - During last season's run to the Brabham Cup crown, the Pensacola Ice Pilots became known for scoring in bunches.
Although points have been harder to come by this fall, the rebuilding Pilots have gotten a significant offensive boost from left winger Adam Courchaine, who has blasted a team-high 10 goals and dished out seven assists for 17 points in 13 games since being assigned to Pensacola by the Houston Aeros of the AHL on Nov. 22.
Most recently, Courchaine scored the game-winning goal in Saturday night's 4-3 victory over Charlotte that snapped a four-game losing streak.
With early season scoring leader Luke Fulghum on assignment to the AHL Toronto Marlies, Courchaine has emerged as one of the Ice Pilots' top guns as they prepare to play host to Gwinnett tonight at the Civic Center.
"For a small guy, he can do an awful lot," Ice Pilots coach Rick Adduono said Tuesday. "The numbers he's put up in this league are tremendous. He came in and showed what a center iceman is supposed to do. He moves the puck and makes his wingers better.
"He's got better scoring hands than I thought he had."
Blending into the Ice Pilots' first power play line of Brendan Cook and Nick Lindberg, Courchaine turned heads around the ECHL by scoring five goals and six assists during a five-game road trip during which the Ice Pilots went 3-1-1 and grabbed seven of 10 possible points.
He was selected the league's player of the week for Nov. 28-Dec. 4.
He has four two-goal games, and two goals have come on the power play. In overtime losses to Columbia and Augusta, Courchaine's game-tying goals enabled Pensacola to salvage valuable single points.
Courchaine, 21, a seventh-round selection and the 219th player taken in the NHL's 2003 entry draft, downplays his contributions, preferring to spread credit to his new teammates.
But the numbers don't lie.
"I've had some chances to score goals, and fortunately some have gone in," said Courchaine, who packs a lot of skill into his 5-foot-10, 175-pound frame. "Hopefully they will continue to go in like this.
