Bronco Week In Review

The Broncos played 3 games this week. The team played host to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday night and then saw the Calgary Hitmen travel to town on Friday night. Finally, the Broncos concluded their week on Sunday when they hit the road and traveled North to Prince Albert for a tilt with the Raiders.
Wednesday night saw the Broncos host the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the team the Broncos are trailing for 3rd in the Central Division. Goaltender Kyle Moir would be the first to bring the crowd to their feet when he made a diving save on a Hurricanes power play to keep the game tied at 0-0. The Broncos would manage to score the first goal of the game when defenseman Donny Lloyd would unleash a shot from the blue line that fooled Canes goaltender Kevin Opsahl at the 4:54 mark of the 1st frame. The Broncos would add a 2nd goal before the period was done when Spencer McAvoy would score his 3rd of the season with 11:06 gone in the first frame, chasing Opsahl from the net after allowing 2 goals on just 4 shots. The Broncos would head into the locker room with a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. The 2nd period proved to be just as strong for the Broncos as Donny Lloyd would let loose another shot from the point on the power play past Scott Boland, Lloyd's 2nd of the night and season at the 8:45 mark of the 2nd period. Broncos Captain Luke Hunter would join in on the fun and score his 7th of the season with just 11 seconds to go in the 2nd period to give the Broncos a 4-0 lead heading into the final frame. At just 2:26 into the 3rd period Hunter would add another past Boland to give the Broncos a 5-0 lead. Kyle Pess would finally solve Moir (PP) with less than 4 minutes remaining in the game to make the final score from Wednesday night 5-1 in favor of Swift Current. The Broncos out shot the Hurricanes 23-21 in the contest with 1,902 fans in attendance. The Broncos power play finished the evening at 1 for 6 while their penalty kill went 7 for 8.
The Broncos played their final game of a 4 game home stand on Friday night when they were host to the Calgary Hitmen…The Broncos would jump out to an early lead in the game as Marc Desloges would score his 7th of the season past goaltender Daniel Spence to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead…The game would remain 1-0 until midway through the 2nd period when Kyle Bortis netted his 4th of the season past Spence (PP) to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead…The Broncos would not be able to escape the 2nd period with their 2 goal lead, however, as Jeff Schultz would slip his 3rd of the season past Moir with just 10 seconds remaining in the 2nd frame to make the score 2-1 for the Broncos heading into the 3rd period…While on the power play in the final period, the Broncos would give up a 2 on 1 and Mike Reich would receive the pass and score his 3rd of the season (SH) past Moir to tie the game up at 2…The Hitmen would continue their pressure and would eventually take their first lead of the game when Keegan Dansereau tipped his 8th of the season past Kyle Moir to give the Hitmen a 3-2 lead…The Broncos would not be able to solve Daniel Spence after that as he secured a 3-2 victory for the Hitmen…The final shots from Friday night were 29-14 in favor of Calgary in front of 2,002 fans. The Broncos power play was 1 for 4 on the evening while the Hitmen scored 1 power play goal on 5 attempts.
Last night the squad departed out of Swift Current for the first time since the Christmas Break as they traveled North to Prince Albert for a tilt with the Raiders. The Broncos would once again jump out to the lead and score the first goal when Levi Nelson would score at the 5:10 mark of the 2nd period. Nelson's 10th of the season gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd period. The Broncos would not be able to contain the Raiders, however, as Kyle Chipchura would score one past Broncos goaltender Kyle Moir to tie the game at 1. The score would remain 1-1 and the game would be sent into overtime. The Raiders out shot the Broncos 30-15 in regulation and limited them to just 2 shots in the 1st period. In the extra frame it would be Evan Schafer who would play the role of hero as he put his 6th of the season past Moir at the 2:32 mark of the extra frame to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead and their 1st win against the Broncos this season. The Raiders would out shoot the Broncos 33-16 in the contest in front of 2,033 fans. The Broncos did not manage to score on just two power play opportunities in the game while they stopped the Raiders on all 7 Prince Albert power plays.
Who's Hot? Daniel Rakos has been the hottest Bronco lately recording 8 points (3G; 5A) in his last 6 games. Rakos had his 5 game point streak snapped on Sunday night but still has 12 points (5G; 7A) in his last 11 games…Broncos 20 year old forward Marc Desloges has 7 points (3G; 4A) in his last 7 games.
Numbers: The Broncos scored the 1st goal in all three games this week but were unable to hold onto their lead for the remainder of the game in 2 of the games. The Broncos are now 8-5-2-4 when they score first as opposed to 3-15-0-4 when they allow the first goal. The team is 6-7-0-3 against Central Division teams this season, however, have failed to capture a win against Western Conference teams (0-7-1-3). The Broncos have captured 3 points in their last 3 games and are now 6 points ahead of the Red Deer Rebels in the battle for the final playoff spot in the Central Division. The Broncos offense is led by Ned Lukacevic who now has 27 points (14G; 13A) in his first 35 games this season. Broncos 19-year-old forward Jeremy Schenderling has a team leading 16 goals and is tied with Daniel Rakos for 2nd in team scoring with 21 points. Levi Nelson continues to be the Broncos leading rookie scorer with 20 points (10G; 10A) this season and is 13th in rookie scoring in the Western Hockey League. Derek Price leads all Broncos defenseman with 14 points this season while Michael Hengen's 4 goals are more than any other Broncos blue liner. Goaltender Kyle Moir continues to be a workhorse for the Broncos and has appeared in 39 games this season. Moir has been between the pipes for all 11 Bronco wins this season and has a .915 save % to go along with a 2.89 goals against average.
Special Teams: The Broncos power play was 2 for 12 this week with Kyle Bortis and Donny Lloyd scoring power play goals. The Broncos have now scored 32 of their 94 goals this season on the power play and have a 15.4% success rate while on the man advantage this season. Jeremy Schenderling leads the way with 7 power play goals. The Broncos allowed just 2 power play goals against on 20 opposition attempts this week and have allowed just 2 power play goals against in their last 5 games (28 for 30). After 41 games the Broncos have allowed 35 goals on 243 opposition power plays, good for a season high 85.6% success rate and 7th in the WHL.
Roster: The Broncos announced last week that defenseman Michael Wilson has joined the team after starting the season with the Quesnel Millionaires of the BCHL…The Broncos have also recalled 15 year old forward Geordie Wudrick from the Notre Dame Hounds of the SJHL…The Broncos are currently carrying a 25 man roster including (1) 15 year old, (2) 16 year olds, (7) 17 year olds, (4) 18 year olds, (8) 19 year olds, and (3) 20 year olds…By hometown, the Broncos roster consists of (10) British
