Bob Ridley Receives WHL Distinguished Service Award

CALGARY, AB – Ron Robison, Commissioner of the Western Hockey League announced today that long-time Medicine Hat Tigers play-by-play announcer Bob Ridley is this year’s recipient of the WHL's Distinguished Service Award.
The WHL Distinguished Service Award, which the WHL introduced during the 2004-05 season, is presented annually to an individual associated with the WHL who has made an extraordinary contribution over an extended period of time at the WHL Club or League level.
Bob Ridley has been associated with the WHL Tigers, in one way or another, since the team’s inception in 1970. Ridley first became involved with the Tigers as the team’s broadcaster and worked in the Tigers public relations department. What also makes Ridley’s contribution so impressive is that he also serves as the Tigers bus driver. In 1970, Ridley volunteered to drive the bus on a part-time basis. 36 years later, he’s still behind the wheel.
Bob Ridley’s commitment to the WHL Tigers speaks for itself. He has missed only one game in his 36 years, a mark which is unmatched in today’s day and age of broadcasting. Bob has been behind the microphone describing four WHL Championships (1973, 1987, 1988, 2004) and two Memorial Cup titles (1987, 1988) won by the Tigers and has watched countless stars move on to the NHL. In total, Bob has broadcast more than 2800 games.
Ridley has given countless hours over the years with the important task of delivering many young men to their destination safe and sound, while being an outstanding embassador to the Western Hockey League, the Medicine Hat Tigers, CHAT Radio and the City of Medicine Hat.
His passion for the Western Hockey League and the sport of hockey exemplifies his true character which makes Bob Ridley an outstanding recipient of the WHL's Distinguished Service Award.
The presentation was made at the Bob Ridley Tribute Dinner in Medicine Hat last night. More than 600 people attended the event, including numerous Tiger Alumni.
Ridley is showing no signs of slowing down as he gets set for another year not only behind the mic, but behind the wheel as well.
