I would love to see more young guys getting dealt to the tigers. I love watching these guys and it prepares them for the future as well. Willie knows what he is doing. Possible get Matt Hallick in the future?

Default Tigers Send Sokol To Portland

PORTLAND, OR - The Portland Winter Hawks acquired 17-year-old forward Matt Sokol Monday from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a 5th round choice in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft.

Sokol had (0-1-1), 4 penalty minutes and a +2 rating in 8 games this season with the Tigers. Last year, as a 16-year-old, the 5’11, 185 pound center-winger had (0-2-2) with 11 penalty minutes and an even rating dressing for just 14 games of spot duty on a veteran-laden Tiger team that won the Central Division championship.

“It is important that we add some skill into our lineup,” said General Manager Ken Hodge. “This works well with our age group that we are trying to develop. After Matt becomes comfortable with our systems, we think he has a chance to be a contributor for us this season.”

In 2004-05, Sokol, from Los Angeles, California and a graduate of the California Wave minor hockey association that produced Winter Hawks’ defenseman Cameron Cepek and several other WHL players, played for the Syracuse Stars of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League, posting (6-14-20) in 35 games.

“We saw quite a few players at Matt’s age group with the California Wave program and felt that group was very strong,” said Portland Coach Mike Williamson. “We hope Matt adds some speed and skill to our lineup and grows with the group of young players that we have.”

Tigers Head Coach and General Manager Willie Desjardins also commented on today's trade.
"Matt is a good young hockey player that wasn't able to get the ice time he wanted to develop, we wish Matt all the best in Portland and throughout the remainder of his career."

To fill the open spot on the their roster the Tigers have recalled 17-year-old defenseman Mark Isherwood from Burnaby of the BCJHL.

"We are real excited to have Mark back with us," stated Desjardins. "Mark played real well for us as a 16-year-old during his time here last season. He is a good skater and another power play defenseman who will contribute this year but is also a big part of our future."

Matt Hallick is awful, if you want him I dont think it will take more than a 4th round bantam pick! Hes still young and he is from Medicine Hat but not a player I would get excited about other than the fact he may have a little more jump playing in front of the hometown crowd!

Brandon, Manitoba – With one week remaining before the start of the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League season, the Brandon Wheat Kings have announced the acquisition of 19-year old right-winger Matt Lowry from the defending champion Medicine Hat Tigers.

In exchange for the 6’ 185 lb. Neepawa product, the Tigers receive a sixth round draft choice in the 2008 WHL bantam draft.

A former member of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Neepawa Natives, Lowry played in 63 regular season games for the Tigers last season, scoring ten goals and 22 points while accumulating 42 minutes in penalties. Lowry added one assist in 22 playoff games.

As a Native in 2005-06, he averaged more than a point per game, scoring nineteen goals and 40 points in 38 games.

“Matt brings championship experience to our club,” says Wheat Kings’ general manager and coach Kelly McCrimmon. “He gives us a veteran right-hand shot forward that we felt we needed.”

Friday’s acquisition gives the Wheat Kings twenty-six players on its pre-season roster, including fourteen WHL veterans.

Lowry is expected to join the Wheat Kings this weekend and will practice with his new club on Monday afternoon.

The Wheat Kings continue preparations for the 2007-08 season this weekend with a home and home pre-season series with the Moose Jaw Warriors, beginning Friday night at Westman Place. Tickets to both tonight’s pre-season game as well as Friday’s Coca Cola Home Opener are on sale now at the K

Yeah i dont think he would neither...Matt Lowry is a better player than Hallick and despite the age difference, it wouldn't help their team any at all especially the way they have been talking about their young depth they have coming into the season.
