You can see why the cupboard was empty when Campese took over as GM.
    2014 - can't evaluate for a few years
    Rd 1 - Ian Scott G. Calgary, Alta. , 6.02 /156
    Rd 2 - traded pick
Rd 3 - Cody Thompson LD, Killarney, Man., 6.03/215
    Rd 4 - Josh Maser LW, Penticton, B.C., 6.00/185
    2013
Rd 1 - Jake Kryski C, Vancouver, B.C., 5.11/155 ( should have gotten more in a trade for a 1st Rd pick, even if he didn't want to be here)
    Rd 2 - traded pick
Rd 3 - Cody Paivarinta, LD, Abbotsford, B.C., 6.05/185 (big but very raw, and some issues)
Rd 4 - Dylan Williamson, LW, Calgary, Alta., 6.00/159 (to early to know)
    2012
Rd 1 - Brendan Guhle, LD, Sherwood Park, Alta., 6.01/157 (looks like a good pick after there were doubts when it was made, great skater with decent size)
Rd 2 - Nick McBride, G, Maple Ridge, B.C., 6.02/160 (consistency is an issues, but still young and received invice to top prospects game)
Rd 2 - Matteo Gennaro, LW, St. Albert, Alta., 6.00/159 (not scoring as much as you'd like, but developing into a solid player)
    Rd 3 - traded pick
Rd 4 - Connor Hobbs, RD, Saskatoon, Sask., 5.11/159 (traded to MH, and then traded again)
    2011
Rd 1 - Reid Gardiner, C, Humboldt, Sask., 5.11/162 (good player, surprised he wasn't draft last year)
    Rd 2 - traded pick
Rd 3 - Tim Vanstone, C, Swift Current, Sask., 5.11/175 (physical player but hands of stone around the net)
Rd 3 - Rylan Parenteau, G, Saskatoon, Sask.. 5.10/150 (as 18 year old rookie is looking more confident with each start)
Rd 4 - Landon Welykholowa, C, Calgary, Alta., 5.11/165 (nothing to show for this pick)
    2010
Rd 1 - Joshua Morrissey, LD, Calgary, Alta., 5.11/165 (hit a home run with this one)
Rd 2 - Luke Mahura, RW, St. Albert, Alta., 5.09/151 (smallish player never could find a place)
Rd 3 - Michael Lorange, C, Winnipeg, Man., 5.10/170 (never played for Raiders)
    Rd 4 - traded pick
    2009
Rd 1 - Mike Winther, C, Trochu, AB (started good, got drafted and didn't show up, traded twice)
Rd 2 - Shane Danyluk, C, Salmon Arm, B.C. (very solid player, early injury to come back from, if he could have figured out a way to score just a little bit would have been a valuable 20 year old)
Rd 3 - Connor Sutton, D, Calgary, AB (never played for Raiders)
Rd 4 - Brent Lashuk, LW, Winfield, B.C. (never played for Raiders)
Rd 4 - Sawyer Lange, D, Prince Albert, SK (nice pic, puck-moving 20 year old)
    2008
Rd 1 - Mark McNeill, C, Edmonton, AB (very good selection, 1st Rd NHL pick)
Rd 2 - Harrison Ruopp, D, Zehner, SK (very good pick, shutdown D-man was NHL draft pick)
Rd 2 - Beau Stewart, C, Outlook, SK (never played for Raiders)
Rd 3 - Brandon Formosa, RW, Mission, B.C. (never played for Raiders)
Rd 3 - Brock Balson, LW, Kamloops, B.C. (never showed much for Raiders, was traded)
Rd 4 - Eric Williams, G, Langley, B.C. (should have had more patience, turned out to be pretty good)

Now for the brilliance of Donn Clark, to compare (and remember why they missed playoff for so long), added a couple of late picks that were notable. 2003 was a disaster for a team with 7 picks in first four rounds - and very little to show for it 3 and 4 years later.
    2007
Rd 1 - Ryan Aasman, D, Medicine Hat, AB (was traded, never did much in WHL)
Rd 2 - Ryan Harrison, C, Kelowna, BC (was OK, but was traded twice in WHL career)
Rd 3 - Sean Aschim, C, Saskatoon, SK (didn't do much in WHL)
Rd 4 - Nathan Hudema, D, Edmonton, AB (who?)
    2006
Rd 1 - Cole Penner, LW, Medicine Hat, AB (disaster pick)
Rd 2 - Ryan Button, D, Edmonton, AB (nice pick, smooth skater, soft player)
Rd 3 - Brandon Herrod, RW, Meadow Lake, SK (solid pick, 5 year WHL player)
    Rd 4 - traded pick
    2005
Rd 1 - Jordan Trach, LW, North Battleford, SK (hurt too much to have an impact)
Rd 2 - Blaine Tendler, D, Viceroy, SK (decent stay at home D-man, but not a shut down guy, skating issues)
Rd 3 - James Dobrowolski, LW, Vernon, B.C (was ok, but no real impact as a player, traded later)
Rd 4 - Tony Oak, LW, Moose Jaw, SK (who?)
Rd 10 - Stanford, Steven, G (good pick, but in 10th round more luck that good evaluation skills)
    2004
Rd 1 - Justin Palazzo, D, Kamloops, BC (best games were as 15 year old call up, then nothing)
    Rd 2 - traded pick
Rd 3 - Daniel Lepp, C, Elm Creek, MB (did nothing for the Raiders)
Rd 4 - Delan Dahl, RW, Saskatoon, SK (another who is that?)
    2003
Rd 1 - Ryan DePape, RW, Winnipeg, MB (was OK, but disappointment with his skill level, was traded)
Rd 2 - Brent Ottman, C, Martensville, SK (not much of an impact, injuries were an issue, traded)
    Rd 3 - Nolan Julseth-White, D, Chilliwack, BC (who?)
Rd 3 - Josh Elder, C, Saskatoon, SK (ok player, but not a difference maker, never really scored at all, played kind of soft for a bigger player)
Rd 3 - Levi Lind, C, Saskatoon, SK (no impact at all)
Rd 4 - Scott Doucet, RW, Coquitlam, BC (hard worker, but 3rd liner at best)
Rd 4 - Neil Sonder, D, Regina, Sk (who?)
    2002
Rd 1 - Mike Gauthier, D, Vancouver,BC (had first pick, traded down as Brule wouldn't come to PA, and took a slow skating, but tough player who was taken in NHL draft, but not worth a 1st rd pick in WHL)
Rd 2 - Julian Marcuzzi, D, Vancouver,BC (never played for Raiders)
    Rd 2 - Mike Wilson, D, Vancouver,BC (who?)
Rd 3 - A.J Thelen, D, Savage,MN (decent player joined team after NCAA issues)
    Rd 3 - Ben Street, C, Coquitlam,BC (who?)
Rd 7 - Jeff May, D, Richmond, BC (was best of about 8 D-men taken in this draft)
    2001
Rd 1 - Chipchura, Kyle, C (1st Rd NHL pick, first overall in WHL draft, captained Canada to WJC gold)
Rd 2 - Byers, Dane, LW (solid WHL player, physical, didn't score a lot, but had NHL attention)
Rd 3 - MacDonald, Jason, D (didn't play for Raiders)
Rd 4 - Pawelec, Joshua, G (no impact for Raiders)
    2000
Rd 1 - Colliton, Jeremy, C (very good pick, could scored, NHL drafted)
Rd 2 - Carefoot, Mitch , RW (no impact for Raiders)
    Rd 3 - traded
Rd 4 - Lubimiv, Nick, LD (who?)
    Rd 9 - Schafer, Evan, D (solid physical D-man)

Campese has a tendency to trade picks. Clark just had a lot of misses. Colliton and Chipchura were big hits in the first round early on, but after that the first round became a wasteland.

It doesn't mean Campese should be here to make the picks for 2015, but some people have very short memories when it comes to the state of this team's talent before he arrived. Three straight years of first round NHL picks i says he has done something right.
I dont know how i didnt see this before. But your obviously showing that you werent around during the Clark era . You point out Stanford as a fluke pick. Its funny you point it out but i dont remember anyone having Stanfords impact for the Raiders that Campese picked after the 3rd round. I agree its to early to know on the last couple years drafts but he has never drafted well after the 3rd round. You pointed out some who ??? that have me puzzled. Mike Wilson ??? got traded to the Broncos where he had a great 3 years against us. Even getting 46 points in 61 games as a dman. He then went on to play AHL as recent as 2 years ago. Nolan Julseth-White ??? he was very good. Would have been our best dman at the time if he could have been recruited. taking him in the 4th was worth the risk. played AHL 2 years ago. Yoy go on to point out Guhle was a good pick. We had 2nd overall. I would suggest if we were to re draft that round today there would be at least 12 guys we take over Guhle. Nothing against the kid he can skate like the wind. But so could Button. He is not as far ahead as Button was at this age. Hopefully 2014 draftees prove me wrong. But they didnt show well at camp.

So your point about Wilson is? What did he do for the Raiders? What was the trade? Nolan Julseth-White - didn't play for the Raiders, so how was that a good pick? If you are going to defend the bad Clark picks, find someone who was good for the Raiders out of the list? I was here - and the end was horrible. Too many slow players, lack of size and very little skill.

Bruno hasn't been very good after the third round -but what did Clark leave the Raiders from 2003-2007 from even the first three rounds? Herrod was a solid player, but the fact that he was the highlight for five years of draft picks says all you need to know about the garbage Clark left behind. And that's not even getting into the imports - Leon ended up here because of Campese.

Not saying that Campese has been great, but at least the he hasn't completely missed on almost every draft. He should be gone after this year as he's had enough time and opportunities to put a contender together and not gotten it done. But at least there have been some players worth watching, which is a lot better than what was here when he arrived.

who cares if they played here ? The fact is they were good players. you said "who ?" like you never heard of them. I was educating you. As far as Campese's good picks almost all were slam dunk picks. I think he missed on Guhle which should have been a sure fire 1st round nhl talent player. And we all know how badly the Tucker and Chevy deals have been for us. But I do on the other hand think hes done his best and works hard. I also think he has done well in the office end of the job. I brought up Strutch , another brought up Wallin . You peed on the idea. who would be better?

The current head coach has a lot better record than Wallin. Struch might make a good head coach, but does this team want to take a chance on an unproven guy?

Whether players are any good for other teams isn't as relevant to whether or not the drafting of those players benefited the Raiders. Did Wilson get traded for someone who helped this team? What did picking Julseth-White do to help the Raiders? Taking a good players (one in 2002 and 2003) who didn't help this team reinforces the argument that Clark's last 4-5 years as GM meant the Raiders had nothing in the talent bank by the time Campese took over as GM. And at least he made the slam dunks. Clark had options that should have been slam dunks as well.

This team has struggled to build any consistency and foundation for winning for a lot longer than Campese has been around. The entire organization needs to figure out what it will take to be better - and not just as a few good months in a season.
